FMSCI Granted National Sports Federation Status: A Major Leap for Indian Motorsport

 


Indian motorsport has officially entered a new era. In a historic move, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports granted provisional recognition to the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) as a National Sports Federation (NSF). This decision marks a pivotal moment in organizing, funding, and elevating racing culture across the nation.

1. Official Government Recognition for FMSCI

The official order issued by the Sports Ministry came into effect immediately. Having submitted its application in June 2026, the FMSCI is now formally acknowledged as the governing body responsible for driving the growth, structure, and promotion of motorsport in India.

2. Paving the Way for Formula 1’s Return by 2028

One of the most exciting implications of this NSF status is the strategic push to bring Formula 1 back to India. With the Sports Ministry forming a dedicated task force alongside FMSCI and state authorities, efforts are actively underway to target an F1 return to the Buddh International Circuit by 2028.

3. Relaxation of National Sports Code Regulations

To facilitate this milestone, the Ministry relaxed specific guidelines from the National Sports Development Code. Mandates requiring affiliation across two-thirds of Indian States/UTs and rigid district-level structures were adjusted to suit the unique infrastructure requirements of motorsport.

4. Key Conditions and Governance Guidelines

Because the status is provisional, FMSCI must align its Constitution and Memorandum of Association with the National Sports Governance Act, 2025. The federation must adhere to strict guidelines concerning anti-doping regulations, RTI compliance, clear election processes, and internal grievance mechanisms.

5. Financial Accountability and Audit Directives

Under the new compliance parameters, FMSCI's financial records will be subject to government oversight. Annual accounts must be audited by a Chartered Accountant empanelled with the Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG), ensuring complete financial transparency and eligibility for government sports grants.

6. Rules Regarding Revocation of NSF Status

The Sports Ministry has outlined strict compliance checks. The NSF recognition can be revoked if the federation fails to comply with governance directives, misrepresents facts, violates its own constitution, or loses recognition from international governing bodies like the FIA or FIM.

7. What This Means for Young Indian Racers

Beyond high-profile events like F1, NSF status opens up structural support, government grants, and grassroots recognition for young Indian drivers. It bridge the gap between regional talent and international racing circuits, paving the path for future Indian champions.
